3:49pm – Begin Board of Governor Candidates Opening Remarks
Kory Jeffrey, Saad Aslam
- What subcommittees of the Board of Governors are you interested it?
- Kory – The infrastructure committee. Even in recessionary times, the Government will put money towards major infastructure projects, even while campuses are required to make large budget cuts.
- Saad – I would also say I am interested in the infrastructure committee. The government soon will anounce that they’re investing $2B into university infrastructure projects and outstanding repair.
- What would you do to best represent the interests of students during this period of growth.
- Saad – The administration has said pretty much that the Waterloo campus will stay the same size while their resources will go to growing Brantford and Milton. I think it is important that while we expand we focus on quality. We must ensure that the education and student life is of a high quality
- Kory – I think as the Brantford campus expands, we have an asymetrical population chart. As it events out, the Board representation will even out.
- If you could chair the BoG for one meeting, what Brantford specific items would you put on the agenda.
- Kory – I would have to go with the cafeteria. It seems to be a pressing isue that has turned into a sink hole. It would be the hole in the ground before other expansion projects.
- Saad – I would have to agree with the University Centre being important. It seems to be vital
- How many years of your term are you planning on serving and how will you liaise with the student government
- Saad – I plan on serving my full two-year term. I am running also for the BoD and hopefully am re-elected so that there is a natural representation both with the WLUSU and WLU to eliminate artificial liaising.
- Kory – I’m not 100% sure if I would spend my 2nd year of the term, as I am attempting to get accepted to do graduate work. Of course I would liaise with the student government, however it is more important to do direct liaising with the students themselves.
- Saad – The meetings are open and you are welcome to attend and students are encouraged to give input
- In the past the University has said that policies are not required for dealing with how students are handled during labour disputes. Do you think there is a need for policy?
- Kory – I feel there is a need for policy. We need to be prepared for these situations. If you were at York right now you would feel that there is a need.
- Saad – I strongly believe that the University is here to put student needs first and policy is the best way to prepare for situations. Students have outside commitments and can’t be required to go to school during the summer due to work stoppage.
